Indiana was the 19th state to be admitted into the Union. The Paleo-Indians were the first people to inhabit the state. Eventually French fur traders came to the region in order to trade with the local tribes. However, the British came and wanted to take over the French fur trade, leading to war. Since the Indians were not treated well by the British, the natives sided with the French, and the war was called the French and Indian War. The British won the war, and much of the land was handed over to the royal crown. After the Americans had defeated the British during the Revolutionary War, the British granted land to the south of the Great Lakes, including Indiana. Settlers out east now migrated toward Indiana as Americans went on their westward expansion. The original capital of Indiana was Corydon where the initial state constitution was set up, but Indianapolis eventually became the state capital. Indiana grew throughout the Industrial Revolution, and after World War II, production increased and urbanization began to take place in the 50's and 60's. Auto, steel, and medicine industrials were among the big time businesses in Indiana. Over the years, the population has continued to grow in this gorgeous state, and modern day Indiana is now home to several large scale cities with populations exceeding 100,000 in each.
